History of Town Vyshgorod
Ukrainian town Vyshhrod was founded in the tenth century. The population is 22,000 inhabitants according to the census of 2001. The town is mentioned in ancient chronicles.
Ancient Vishgorod began it's life as a fortification on the steep banks of the river Dnieper. From one side the town is well protected by the steep river banks, and from the other side a huge fortress was protecting it. The town area was about 80 acres.
The town is mentioned as the residence of the Princess Olga and Prince Vladimir the Great. Another name of the town ruffly translates as "Olga's town"
According to the legend Prince Boris and Prince Gleb, who a named as saints according to the east orthodox tradition, were burried in Vyshgorod. In the reign of Yaroslav the Wise, the town became one of the most important spiritual and religious center of the Kyiv Rus'.
The church had been built in honor of saints Boris and Gleb. At first a wooden church, eventually it become one of the greatest stone churches in Kyiv Rus'. The temple was decorated with precious stones and gold.
The first bridge across the Dnieper River was located near the town.
